My brother loves dune (which he recently got me to read), and his birthday (26) is in a weak and a half. He was kinda interested in TableTop role playing, but i think he never played any (at least nothing structured like D&D). So i want to run a game for him and about 3 friends of his. These are the things i can really use suggestions on, but I'd love to hear any suggestions you may have:. what system can i use? It needs to be relatively simple - so i can use for a one shot with players who are completely new to the hobby. I suspect people have already created adventures and situations to play that are much better then what i would create, If you know any ready-made adventures or know where i can search for them it would be super useful:). Any suggestions for running games to new players in general:)Thanks!and p.s, i didn't finish the book yet so try not to spoil it;) also it's my first post here so hopefully i didn't do anything i shouldn't:).
The closest in themes and ideas is probably Fading Suns. That, however, is not a fast and easy to do system (very good, though). There is a sourcebook to run Savage World within that universe (Savage World Fading Suns), which makes the rules easier. However, at that point, you need both Fading Suns and Savage Worlds.
Finally, I know that there are several reports you can find online by people using either Savage World of FATE to hack their own Dune RPG. In my opinion, success would depend on how well you know Dune.
My suggestion would be to google and read a few (there seem several on ). As for systems, I think both Savage World and FATE are pretty easy to learn, and the basic books are cheap when bought as PDF. For FATE I'd suggest the FATE Accelerated version, simply because it is a bit more streamlined. The question is if you want a focus more on narration (FATE) or pulpy tactics (SW).
I'd say both are easy to learn also for beginners. As for feasibility: Well, it is true that Dune is built on intrigue and politics, but it does contain some action. Make a small 'mission' during which the characters are betrayed and run into an unexpected ally, ham that aspect up. Maybe think of the Atreides taking over Arrakis in the first book - do something similar elsewhere.Or, just as an idea, even have the players play minor characters not out of the book that have a mission on the outer rims of those events (but important), with your players (but not characters) knowing that the betrayal and attack by the Harkonnen will come soon.
That way you could use your players' knowledge to create a sense of foreboding. Of course, they might act on that knowledge - let them, but in that case, the betrayal does not happen. Or do something else entirely, it is up to you.
As I said, just an idea. I think you're applying the idea of genre, at least as PbtA users it, too narrowly. Anything that's heavily stylized and recognizable works well. I think there are a lot of games that skew to a wider genre but at heart are from a single piece of media. The Sword, the Crown and the Unspeakable Power is basically PbtA game of thrones.
Monster of the Week is pretty much just Buffy. Epylion is just My Little Ponies that call themselves dragons. Masks is directly inspired by a cartoon, Young Justice I think.
Blades in the Dark could be called Dishonored fanfic.I think Dune is just perfect for a PbtA game. Monster of the Week is Buffy, the Dresden Files, Supernatural, and a couple of others I'd need to look up.Masks is Young Justice, Teen Titans, and other more satellite shows, being the most direct adaptation, but still relying heavily on the conventions of pre-established comic books with the well-known tropes of sidekicks already.Blades in the Dark is actually less Dishonored than you might think, at least as a dedicated fan of both.
It pulls from a lot more Victorian crime dramas than just Dishonored, and is probably most heavily pulled from Peaky Blinders, looking at the way the mechanics are built up. It could be directly based on Dishonored but nothing I've ever seen suggests that.I can't speak to the Sword, the Crown, and the Unspeakable Power but 'political medieval fiction' is a pretty big genre unto itself, so I'm not surprised it works pretty well if it touches on thing related to that. That said, if any work of fiction could be said to be a genre unto itself, its probably GoT. Epylion I'd never even heard of, I'll need to give that a look.Addressing the larger concern, though, while stylistic and recognizable is important, the reason that a larger genre is necessary for a good PbtA is so that you're pulling from character archetypes and not just characters themselves. A player needs to be able to play the haunted spellcaster, not just Willow. You need other shades and parts of the trope to color it in.
This presents an even larger issue with Dune as a work for PbtA, as Dune doesn't rely on established archetypes much at all. You could create a Bene Gesserit character, sure, but you can't create multiple Muad'Dibs and it'd be hard to justify getting a single Fremen out of the setting. So I get what you're saying, but I just think that Dune is not ideal for PbtA.
