IgnitorOlder gas furnaces came on after the thermostat triggered the pilot light to start the flame. Nowadays, an electronic ignitor heats up to ignite the burners to produce heat. Check the combustion chamber for flames. If there are no flames but a strong smell of gas, immediately turn off the furnace. A failed ignitor coil requires experienced replacement. If you have experience, you can replace this element yourself.

If you don't, you need the services of an HVAC technician to replace it. If the unit has power and the gas does not come on, more than likely the ignitor failed.
